WHITE MITTENS

Fog came early to Nebraska,
And slender churches became hidden
Pastors came out of them with scarves -
Their children tight-dressed
 and with white mittens

Cars moved slowly,
Dipped beams constant; the radio turned on
The fog came early - unawares.
